House Republicans Support Responsible Budgeting
3/23/2010

Lawmakers urge the review of mandates, reductions of waste and fraud, program efficiencies to squeeze revenues, House GOP Leader Smith says

House Republican Leader Sam Smith (R-Jefferson County) today expressed concerns regarding the governor’s budget proposal (House Bill 2279) which passed the House today. The $29 billion budget increases spending by more than $1 billon while current revenues are $500 million less than anticipated.

“House Republican members support responsible and timely budgeting. We are glad to have debated the budget on the floor of the House in March – but this budget is irresponsible.

“If the budget would rid us of wasteful spending at welfare and address the proven fraud there, we could support it.

“If the governor’s budget encompassed real program efficiencies and actual savings, we could support it.

“If the budget were to begin dealing with pension problems, review onerous mandates, we could support it.

“The people of this state want government spending to be ‘under control.’ Increasing the budget by more than $1 billion is NOT getting spending under control.

“The fact is, state revenues have not really improved from last year as we face a $500 million deficit. This budget relies on nearly $3 billion in federal stimulus funds which will run out, of which $850 million doesn’t even exist ... clearly a different and responsible approach is needed. House Republicans favor crafting a sensible spending plan reflecting today’s economy. The governor’s proposal just doesn’t do it.”
